South America: FIFA World Cup - qualifiers
Match start: 23:00 (GMT+2)
On the 6th of October in Venezuelan city San Cristóbal will be held one of the central matches of 17th round of CONMEBOL qualification campaign with participation of the main underdog of the tournament and the bright favorite.
Taking after the pentachampions the second line in the champions’ race Uruguay had come to meet with the worst team of the current qualification stage not only to win but also to get the direct berth to FIFA World Cup Russia 2018.
Qualification campaign regulations
Prior to 2 rounds before finishing of South American qualification stage the team of Óscar Tabárez is the main challenger for the final vice-champion title:
Brazil – 37, Uruguay – 27, Colombia – 26, Peru – 24, Argentina – 24, Chile – 23 …
According to regulations of the qualification tournament the direct berths for FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 from CONMEBOL are getting only 4 best teams. And the fifth team will be still playing in November play-offs against New Zealand.
Óscar Tabárez’s bid
For two left matches against Venezuela and Bolivia the former coach of Milan and longstanding coach of Lasalesta had called the goalkeeper Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray), defender Diego Godín (Atlético) and Maxi Pereira (Porto), midfielder Álvaro González (Nacional), Matías Vecino (Inter Milan) and many other famous in Europe football players. But the main players are still two goalscorers - Edinson Cavani (PSG), Luis Suárez (Barcelona).
The final result of the match in San Cristóbal will depend on successful game of Cavani and Suárez. By the way, the possible victory of guests in the forthcoming meeting is doubtful.
Firstly, according to the results of this game Uruguay can officially qualify for FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 and that is why motivation factor of Lasalesta stars is very high. And secondly, the level of game of the hosts during this qualification campaign doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
