EUROPA: Champions League – group stage
Match start: 20:45 (GMT+2)
The history of battle of grandees of English and Swiss football comprises four matches in which the Mancunians have gained only one victory 15 years ago (2002). But during the decisive 6 round of the group stage in December 2011 Basel on its St. Jakob-Park had won over practically undefeated in that time the team of Sir Alexander Ferguson (2:1) and didn’t let the Mancunians go into the first round of play-off.
It is obvious, that the fans of United are still remembering that nightmare in Basel and the third final place in the group after Benfica and Basel.
Manchester United England (the head coach José Mourinho)
Since that incredible final result almost 6 years have passed but the current squad of MU still has 5 football players who were playing or just included into the bid in December 2011.
These are the goalkeeper David de Gea, midfielder Antonio Valencia, Philip Jones and winger Ashley Young. We are sure that these players are able to set off the whole modern team of José Mourinho for the forthcoming game with the champion of Switzerland.
Basel Switzerland (the head coach Raffaello Santi)
Unlike previous seasons, irreplaceable champion of all last years back watered largely in this new national Super League championship. And here the question is not in such surprising for Basel third place but in the total sum of scored points. For example, in three last matches the red and blues have shared the points with Lugano (1:1) and Sion (1:1) and then on its famous St. Jakob-Park and lost to the weakest team of the League Lausanne (1:2).
It is hard to say what is happening with the champion but with such results it is difficult for Basel to claim for its leaving the group. Especially, on the back of English Manchester United and Portuguese Benfica.
