Wigan had kicked Manchester City out from FA Cup

In
frames of the 5
th
round of the FA Cup Manchester City played away match against Wigan.
In 2013 these teams have met with each other during the tournament
final, and then the
Latics
had
sensationally
won at Wembley with the score 1:0. During the next season the teams
again met with each other in a national cup at the stage of a
quarterfinal. Wigan had made a sensation again and won with the score
2:1. Now the Latics are playing only the third division but this
fact didn’t prevent them of dreaming about new victory over the
Citizens.

Josep
Guardiola had used rotation but at the same time the squad of
Manchester City looked very strong. In comparison with the Champions
League match against Basel the defensive line of the Citizens has
changed almost completely – this time into the starting line-up John
Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Danilo were included. The goalkeeper was
Claudio Bravo whom Josep Guardiola trusts in cup tournaments.

Manchester
City quickly took advantage and created good moment. After delivery
from the right wing Sergio
Agüero
had headed – the ball flew slightly above a crossbeam. Shortly
after, İlkay
Gündoğan
shot from the penalty area and Christian Walton had to work in a
frame. Wigan was defending but he tried also to counterattack. In one
of the episodes Will Grigg had quite good chance when he was shooting
from the left part of the penalty area: the ball got into the gates
from the outer side. And a little bit earlier Danilo acted very
sloppy near his gates and the ball came to Gary Roberts.
Nevertheless, the player of the Latics didn’t manage to pass across
Claudio Bravo.

The
team of Josep Guardiola continued to dominate. Aymeric Laporte had a
chance to demonstrate his skills but he didn’t manage to adapt to the
rebounded ball, being very close to the gates of the rival. Then
Fernandinho shot directly from the center of the penalty area – the
ball flew over the gates. Sergio
Agüero
also created some moments. So, at the end of a time from 14 m he had
kicked but the goalkeeper saved the team. And before the break the
game received unexpected turn. Fabian Delph, trying not to allow
counterattack of Wigan, went to a rough slide tackle. The referee at
first wanted to show a yellow card but then had changed his mind and
sent Delph off. This decision caused rough emotions among football
players and even coaches – Josep Guardiola and Paul Cook were
arguing with each other for a long time.

Sending
off has forced Josep Guardiola to make a substitution – Leroy Sane
was substituted on Kyle Walker. Despite numerical disadvantage,
Manchester City continued to own game advantage and Wigan started to
have much less goal moments. The Latics seldom organized something
acceptable in the attack but on the 79
th
minute the hosts could take the lead. Walker’s
error allows the forward to charge through on goal from the left.
He’s under pressure from three defenders but stays calm and curls a
fine finish past Bravo and into the far right corner. The Citizens
tried to change the situation but the team of Pail Cook had managed
to survive.

The
final score – 1:0. Sensation! Wigan for the 3rd time in 5 years had
won over Manchester City in frames of the FA Cup. The Latics will
hostSouthampton
in frames of the ¼ final.
